When pictures are the only reference for a sculpture, or it is being created from someone's imagination, an understanding of anatomy helps tremendously.  Volz has done extensive study of the muscular and skeletal construction of the human body.  This knowledge has been invalueable for helping him create sculptures that display lifelike movements and are properly proportioned.  Below are some of the references he uses.
