Volz has encountered many materials in his sculpting career. He found dense carving foam to be great for building large lightweight statues in a relatively short time. *(This is a special polyfoam that unlike regular Styrofoam, is environmentally safe. It is LEEDS certified, and passes rigorous testing for new Green construction of buildings. )
Exposure to the idea came in 1991 while working on outdoor Christmas displays. The candy on this Ginger Bread House was made from regular Styrofoam from a Home Center.
Next he tried his hand at a figure with geometric shapes. This robot is still in new condition after 14 years!
And with a friend, Volz carved this 747 jet plane for Northwest Airlines. It ended up suspended from the ceiling at the Mall of America in Minneapolis.
Volz found a foam that is three times denser than regular Styrofoam. (Similar to balsa wood.) As he's honed his techniques, the results speak for themselves.
